HOW TO READ YOUR GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE INSIGHTS LIKE A PRO

Your Google Business Profile gives you free data about how customers find you. But most plumbers have no idea what those numbers mean. Let's fix that.

Dear Plumber,

Google is giving you free data about your customers.

Like, incredibly valuable, would-cost-you-thousands-to-get-from-a-consultant data. For free. Right inside your Google Business Profile.

And you're probably ignoring it.

I don't blame you. When you log into your GBP dashboard and see graphs, percentages, and metrics... it looks like a foreign language. You've got pipes to fix, not spreadsheets to analyze.

But here's the thing. Those numbers are telling you exactly what's working, what's broken, and where your next customers are coming from. If you know how to read them.

So let me translate. In plain English. No marketing jargon. No nerd speak.

Where to Find Your Insights

Log into your Google Business Profile (or the Google Maps app). Click on "Performance" or "Insights" depending on your version.

You'll see a dashboard with several key metrics. Let's break down each one.

Metric #1: How People Find You

This tells you whether people are searching for your business by name or finding you through general searches.

Direct Searches: People who typed your business name into Google. They already knew who you were. This is your existing reputation and word-of-mouth at work.

Discovery Searches: People who searched for something like "plumber near me" or "drain cleaning [city]" and found you. They didn't know you existed until Google showed them.

Why this matters:

If most of your views come from Direct searches, that means Google isn't bringing you NEW customers. It's just helping people who already know you find your phone number. Your SEO needs work.

If you're getting a healthy chunk of Discovery searches, that means Google is actively introducing you to new potential customers. That's what you want.

What to aim for: At least 40-60% of your views should come from Discovery searches. If it's less than 30%, your GBP optimization and SEO are underperforming.

Metric #2: Search Queries

This is gold. Absolute gold.

Google shows you the actual words people typed to find your business. Things like:

  1. "plumber near me"
  2. "emergency plumber [your city]"
  3. "water heater repair [your city]"
  4. "drain cleaning service"

Why this matters:

These are the exact keywords your potential customers use. If "water heater repair" shows up frequently, you better have a killer water heater page on your website. If "emergency plumber" is a top query, make sure your site screams "24/7 EMERGENCY SERVICE" on the homepage.

What to do with this info:

  1. Look at your top 10-15 search queries
  2. For each one, check: "Do I have a dedicated page on my website for this?"
  3. If the answer is no, create one. You're literally getting a cheat sheet of what to build.

Also look for queries you SHOULD be showing up for but aren't. If nobody's finding you for "sewer line repair [city]" but you offer that service, that's a gap. Fill it.

Metric #3: Customer Actions

This tells you what people DO after they find your listing. The main actions are:

Website Clicks: They clicked through to your website. Direction Requests: They asked for driving directions to your location. Phone Calls: They called you directly from your GBP listing.

Why this matters:

Phone calls are your money metric. That's the action that leads directly to booked jobs.

If you're getting lots of views but few calls, something's off. Maybe your listing doesn't look trustworthy enough. Maybe your reviews aren't great. Maybe your photos are terrible (or nonexistent).

Direction requests are interesting for plumbers. Most plumbers go TO the customer, so lots of direction requests might mean people are trying to find your physical location. If you have a storefront, great. If not, this metric is less relevant.

Website clicks show how many people want to learn more before calling. If this number is high but your leads are low, your website might be the bottleneck. Learn how to fix your conversion rate. People are clicking through but not converting.

Benchmarks for plumbers: - A healthy GBP generates 100-500+ calls per month depending on your market size - Website clicks should be 2-3x your call volume (many people check the site first) - If calls are under 50/month, there's room to grow significantly

Metric #4: Photo Views

This one surprises people. But it matters.

Google tracks how many times your photos are viewed compared to similar businesses in your area.

Why this matters:

Businesses with more photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than businesses without photos. Read our guide on Google Business photos for tips.

Google literally tells you if you have more or fewer photos than similar businesses. If you're below average, start adding photos. Lots of them.

What photos to add: - Your trucks (branded if possible) - You and your team in uniform - Before/after shots of jobs - Your office or shop - Equipment and tools - Happy customers (with permission)

Aim for at least 30+ photos. Update monthly with new ones. Google rewards active, photo-rich profiles.

Metric #5: Reviews Summary

Your GBP shows your total review count, average rating, and recent review trends.

What to watch for:

  1. Review velocity: Are you getting consistent new reviews, or did they stop months ago? Google favors businesses with a steady stream of recent reviews.
  2. Rating trend: Is your average going up or down over time? If it's dropping, something operational might need fixing.
  3. Response rate: Are you responding to reviews? Google (and customers) notice when you don't.

The magic numbers: - Under 4.0 stars? Emergency. Fix this immediately. - 4.0-4.4? Good, but there's room to grow. - 4.5+? Excellent. Keep it up. - Under 50 reviews? You need more volume. Push harder on review collection. - 100+? Strong social proof. You're in great shape.

How to Use These Insights Monthly

Set a calendar reminder. First of every month. 15 minutes. That's all it takes.

Monthly GBP Check-in:

  1. Check search queries. Anything new popping up? Any service you offer that people aren't finding you for?

2. Check customer actions. Are calls trending up or down? If down, why? (Fewer reviews? Competitor doing something better? Season change?)

3. Check photo views. Are you above or below the average for similar businesses? Add 3-5 new photos if you're behind.

4. Check review count and rating. On track? If reviews have slowed, push harder on your collection system.

5. Post an update. While you're in there, publish a Google Post. A job photo, a seasonal tip, or a promotion. Takes 5 minutes. Keeps your profile active.

The Insights Most Plumbers Miss

Here are three things I see plumbers overlook constantly:

### 1. Seasonal Patterns

Your GBP insights show data over time. Look at 3-month and 12-month trends. You'll see seasonal patterns. Maybe calls spike in November (frozen pipes) and dip in April.

Use this to plan ahead. If you know calls drop in March, create a spring maintenance promotion in February. Get ahead of the slump.

### 2. Competitor Comparison

Google gives you a rough comparison to similar businesses. If your photo views are "below average," your competitors are doing it better. If your search appearance is "above average," you're winning.

Use this as motivation. Not ego. Actionable motivation.

### 3. New vs. Returning

Are people finding you for the first time, or are repeat visitors checking your listing? If it's mostly new people who aren't calling, your listing needs better trust signals (photos, reviews, complete information).

Free Data. Massive Impact.

Google is literally handing you a roadmap to more customers. For free. Every month.

The plumber who reads these insights and acts on them has a massive advantage over the plumber who ignores them.

P.S. One of our clients started checking his GBP insights monthly and noticed that "tankless water heater installation" was a top search query. He didn't even have a page for that on his website. We built one. Within 60 days, it was generating 8-10 leads per month. All because he spent 15 minutes looking at free data. The answers are sitting right there. You just gotta look.
