CASE STUDY: VIRGINIA BEACH PLUMBER TURNS WEBSITE INTO A 24/7 SALESMAN

How a Virginia Beach plumber transformed his outdated website into a lead-generating machine that books jobs while he sleeps. Full results inside.

Dave had been plumbing in Virginia Beach for 16 years.

Built a solid reputation. Had a crew of 5. Did decent work, kept customers happy, and relied on the same marketing he'd always used: truck wraps, word-of-mouth, and a prayer.

His website? A WordPress template from 2018. Five pages. Stock photos. No reviews on the site. A contact form that, he later found out, hadn't been working for 8 months.

Eight months of missed leads. From a broken form. On a website nobody was checking.

Let that sink in.

pun intended

The Problem

Dave's business was fine. Not great. Fine.

He was doing around $45,000/month in revenue. Comfortable. But he knew there was more out there.

The problem was visibility. In Virginia Beach, a metro area of 1.8 million people, Dave was a ghost online. His Google Business Profile had 23 reviews (his top competitor had 340). His website ranked on page 1 for exactly zero searches. His service pages were nonexistent.

Worse, he was spending $1,800/month on Google Ads and getting maybe 15 leads. That's $120 per lead. And half of those leads were tire kickers who never booked.

Dave was paying premium prices for mediocre results. Sound familiar?

What We Did

We sat down with Dave (well, a Zoom call, he was busy unclogging a drain) and mapped out a complete online overhaul.

The new website included:

16 dedicated service pages: Every service Dave offered got its own page with unique content, local pricing, photos from actual jobs, and customer reviews. Water heaters, drain cleaning, sewer camera inspection, gas lines, water filtration, bathroom remodeling plumbing, faucets, toilets, garbage disposals, sump pumps, pipe repair, backflow testing, tankless water heaters, hydro jetting, water line repair, and emergency services.

12 service area pages: Virginia Beach is huge, and the surrounding Hampton Roads area even bigger. We created dedicated pages for Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Williamsburg, and specific Virginia Beach neighborhoods like Sandbridge, Great Neck, and Hilltop.

Emergency service page: A dedicated 24/7 emergency plumbing page with a large click-to-call button, emergency service list, and response time guarantee. This page was designed to capture those high-value middle-of-the-night leads.

After-hours lead capture system: Online booking form on every page. AI chatbot for after-hours questions. Automated text/email follow-up sequences. Text-us button on mobile.

Review integration: Live Google review feed embedded on the homepage, service pages, and a dedicated reviews page. Plus an automated review request system triggered after every completed job.

Blog content plan: 2 posts per month targeting long-tail keywords specific to Virginia Beach. Topics like "Why Virginia Beach Homes Have Hard Water" and "Hurricane Season Plumbing Preparation for Hampton Roads."

The Results: Month by Month

Month 1: New site launched. Google started indexing. Dave was checking his analytics every day like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Organic traffic: 120 visitors Leads from website: 5 Still running Google Ads: $1,800/month

Month 2: First rankings appeared. "Drain cleaning Virginia Beach" hit page 3. Emergency plumbing page started getting traction.

Organic traffic: 280 visitors Leads from website: 9

Month 3: Three service pages hit page 1. The Norfolk and Chesapeake city pages started ranking. First "I found you on Google" customer.

Organic traffic: 650 visitors Leads from website: 18 Dave: "Okay, this is actually working."

Month 4-5: The after-hours system started paying off big time. Dave was waking up to 2-3 form submissions and chat messages every morning. Jobs waiting to be booked before he finished his coffee.

Organic traffic: 1,100 visitors Leads from website: 31 After-hours leads specifically: 14

Month 6: Major milestone. Dave cut his Google Ads budget from $1,800 to $800/month because organic leads were filling his schedule. Still running ads for competitive terms but no longer dependent on them.

Organic traffic: 1,600 visitors Leads from website: 42 Google reviews: 67 (up from 23)

Month 8: Dave hired technician #6. The website was generating more leads than his team could handle some weeks. He started being selective about which jobs to take.

Organic traffic: 2,200 visitors Leads from website: 58

the good kind of problem

Month 10: Dave turned off Google Ads completely. "Why would I pay for something I'm getting for free?" His words, not mine. (Though I'd have said the same thing.)

Organic traffic: 2,800 visitors Leads from website: 71 Google reviews: 112

Month 12: Full year results. The transformation was complete.

Organic traffic: 3,400/month Leads from website: 84/month Google reviews: 143 Monthly revenue: $82,000 (up from $45,000) Google Ads spend: $0

The Numbers That Matter

Let's zoom out on the financials.

Before the new website: - Monthly revenue: $45,000 - Google Ads spend: $1,800/month ($21,600/year) - Cost per lead (ads): $120 - After-hours lead capture: 0 - Online lead source: ~8% of total business

After the new website (Month 12): - Monthly revenue: $82,000 - Google Ads spend: $0 - Cost per lead (organic): ~$5 - After-hours leads: 35-40% of total website leads - Online lead source: ~55% of total business

Revenue increase: $37,000/month = $444,000/year

Total investment in the website: ~$4,200 (build + 12 months of content)

ROI: over 10,000%.

Not a typo.

The After-Hours Game Changer

Dave told me the single biggest surprise was the after-hours leads.

"I used to go home at 5 and that was it until morning. Now I wake up with appointments already on the schedule. My website booked them while I was watching football."

In month 12, 36 of his 84 website leads came in between 5pm and 8am. Almost half. These were leads he was completely missing before.

The AI chatbot handled basic questions. The booking form captured service requests. The automated follow-up kept people engaged until morning.

And because most of his competitors' websites just showed a phone number with no after-hours capture... Dave was often the only plumber who responded. He closed those jobs at nearly a 90% rate.

What Dave Says Now

I asked Dave for a quote for this case study. Here's what he said:

"I've been a plumber for 16 years. I thought I knew how to run a business. But I was leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table because my website was garbage. The new site doesn't just look good. It works. It sells for me 24/7. Best money I've ever spent. And I mean that."

Could This Be You?

Virginia Beach is a competitive market. 1.8 million people. Hundreds of plumbers. If Dave can dominate it with the right website, what could you do in your market?

The formula isn't secret. Dedicated service pages. City pages. After-hours capture. Reviews. Blog content. Consistent execution over 12 months. You can check your own site's performance right now at PageSpeed Insights.

That's it. No tricks. No gimmicks. Just a website that actually works for a living.

P.S. Dave waited 16 years to fix his website. He says that's his biggest regret. "Every year without a real website was probably $200K in missed revenue," he told me. How many years have you been waiting? Let's stop waiting.
