GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE UPDATES YOU SHOULD MAKE RIGHT NOW (2026 EDITION)
Google Business Profile keeps changing. Here are the updates plumbers need to make in 2026 to stay ahead of the competition and dominate local search.
When's the last time you actually looked at your Google Business Profile?
If you're like most plumbers... you set it up 3 years ago, added a logo and phone number, and never touched it again.
Meanwhile, Google has added a dozen new features. Changed how they rank local results. Updated the interface twice.
And your competitors? Some of them are actually using these features. They're showing up above you in the map pack. Getting more calls. Booking more jobs.
All because they updated a free Google listing that takes 20 minutes.
Let me show you what to fix. Right now.
rolls up sleeves
Why Your GBP Matters More Than Ever
Quick refresher on why this matters.
46% of all Google searches have local intent. "Plumber near me." "Drain cleaning [city]." "Emergency plumber."
When someone searches locally, Google shows the Local 3-Pack at the top of results. Three business listings with a map. Above all the organic results. Above the ads sometimes.
Getting into that 3-Pack is the single most valuable real estate in local SEO. And your Google Business Profile is what determines whether you're in it.
Not your website. Not your ads. Your GBP.
So yeah. This matters.
The Updates to Make Right Now
### 1. Add Your Services With Descriptions
Google now lets you add detailed services to your profile. Not just category labels. Actual services with descriptions.
Go to your GBP dashboard. Click "Edit Profile." Find "Services."
Add every single service you offer. Each one with a description:
- Water Heater Installation: "We install tank and tankless water heaters from top brands including Rheem, AO Smith, and Rinnai. Same-day installation available."
- Drain Cleaning: "Professional drain cleaning for kitchen, bathroom, and main line drains. We use camera inspection and hydro jetting for stubborn clogs."
- Sewer Line Repair: "Trenchless and traditional sewer line repair and replacement. Camera inspection included with every job."
Why this matters: Google uses these service descriptions to match your listing with search queries. If someone searches "tankless water heater installation" and your services section mentions tankless... you're more likely to show up.
Most plumbers have zero services listed. Or they have generic categories without descriptions. Fix this today.
### 2. Upload Fresh Photos (Real Ones)
Google rewards profiles that regularly add new photos. Not once a year. Monthly.
What to upload:
- Before/after photos of completed jobs
- Photos of your team in uniform
- Your truck(s) with visible branding
- Equipment photos (your jetter, camera equipment, etc.)
- Photos of you with happy customers (with permission)
What NOT to upload:
- Stock photos (Google can detect these and it hurts your ranking)
- Blurry phone photos
- Photos with no relevance to plumbing
Profiles with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than profiles with fewer than 10 photos. That's not a small difference. That's a "you're crazy not to do this" difference.
Aim to upload 5-10 new photos every month. After every job, snap a quick before/after. It takes 30 seconds.
### 3. Post Weekly Updates
Google Business Posts are like mini social media updates on your profile. And most plumbers ignore them completely.
Post types that work:
- Completed job posts: "Just finished a tankless water heater installation in [neighborhood]. Customer is saving 30% on energy bills!" Include a photo.
- Seasonal tips: "Winter is coming. Here's how to prevent frozen pipes." Link to a blog post.
- Offers: "$50 off water heater flush this month. Call to schedule." Include an offer CTA.
- Updates: "Now serving [new city]!" or "Welcome our new technician, Mike!"
One post per week. Takes 5 minutes. Google rewards active profiles with better visibility.
Think of it this way. Google sees two plumbing profiles. One hasn't been updated in 8 months. One posts weekly. Which one does Google trust is still in business and actively serving customers?
Exactly.
### 4. Respond to Every Single Review
This is non-negotiable in 2026.
Every positive review: Thank them by name. Mention the specific service. Keep it genuine.
Every negative review: Respond professionally. Acknowledge the issue. Offer to make it right. Don't get defensive.
Google has confirmed that review responses are a ranking factor. Businesses that respond to reviews rank higher than those that don't.
Plus, potential customers read your responses. A thoughtful reply to a negative review can actually build MORE trust than the negative review destroys.
Set a rule: respond to every review within 24 hours. No exceptions.
### 5. Update Your Business Description
Your GBP description has a 750-character limit. Most plumbers either leave it blank or wrote something generic 4 years ago.
Rewrite it with these elements:
- Years in business
- Number of completed jobs or customers served
- Service area
- Key services
- What makes you different
- A call to action
Example: "Family-owned plumbing company serving Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads for 16 years. Over 8,000 completed jobs. Licensed, insured, and background-checked technicians. We specialize in water heaters, drain cleaning, sewer repair, and 24/7 emergency service. Free estimates on all work. Call today or book online."
Include keywords naturally. Don't stuff them. But make sure the services you want to rank for appear in your description.
### 6. Enable Messaging
Google lets customers message you directly through your Business Profile. It's like texting but through Google.
Turn it on. Right now.
Go to your GBP dashboard. Find "Messaging." Enable it. Set up an auto-reply like: "Thanks for reaching out! We'll respond within 30 minutes during business hours. If this is an emergency, call us at [number]."
38% of consumers prefer messaging over calling. That aligns with what we see in forms vs. phone data. If you don't have messaging enabled, you're losing those people to a competitor who does.
### 7. Use the Q&A Feature Proactively
Your GBP has a Q&A section where anyone can ask questions about your business. Most plumbers wait for random people to ask random things.
Instead, seed it yourself.
Ask yourself the questions customers ask you most: - "Do you offer emergency service?" YES, we're available 24/7. - "How much does drain cleaning cost?" Our drain cleaning starts at $149. - "Do you serve [nearby city]?" Absolutely! We serve all of Hampton Roads. - "Are your technicians licensed?" Yes, all technicians are licensed, insured, and background-checked.
This does two things: It pre-answers objections (reducing friction) and it adds keyword-rich content to your profile (boosting SEO).
### 8. Add Products
Yeah, plumbers can add "products" to their GBP. Even though you're a service business.
Use this for your main services:
- Water Heater Installation: $1,200-3,500
- Drain Cleaning: $149-350
- Sewer Camera Inspection: $150-300
- Annual Maintenance Plan: $199/year
Add photos, descriptions, and pricing for each "product." This creates rich visual listings that stand out in search results.
Not many plumbers use this feature. Which means it's a quick competitive advantage.
The 20-Minute Audit
Here's your action plan. Set a timer for 20 minutes and go through this checklist:
- [ ] Add/update all services with descriptions
- [ ] Upload 10 new real photos
- [ ] Write and publish a Google Post
- [ ] Respond to any unanswered reviews
- [ ] Update your business description
- [ ] Enable messaging
- [ ] Add 5 Q&A entries
- [ ] Add your top services as "products"
That's it. 20 minutes. And you'll be ahead of 90% of the plumbers in your market.
Do this once, then set a calendar reminder to update your GBP weekly. Post, add photos, respond to reviews. Make it a habit.

P.S. Your Google Business Profile is literally free. Google gives you this tool at no cost. And most plumbers barely use it. That's like being handed a winning lottery ticket and forgetting to cash it. Don't leave free money on the table.
