THE 15 ONLINE DIRECTORIES EVERY PLUMBER MUST BE LISTED ON
Being listed on the right directories boosts your Google rankings and puts you in front of customers actively searching for plumbers. Here are the 15 that matter.
There are thousands of online directories out there.
Most of them are useless.
But there's a handful that actually matter. The ones Google pays attention to. The ones homeowners actually use. The ones that can move the needle on your rankings.
Here are the 15 directories every plumber needs to be listed on. No fluff. No filler. Just the ones that count.
Why Directory Listings Matter
Before we get to the list, let me explain why this matters.
When Google decides whether to rank your plumbing business in local search, it looks for something called NAP consistency. NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone Number.
Google cross-references your business info across the internet. If your name, address, and phone number are consistent across multiple trusted directories, Google thinks, "Okay, this is a real, established business."
More consistent listings = more trust from Google = higher local rankings.
It's like having multiple references on a job application. The more people vouching for you, the more credible you look.
The 15 Must-Have Directories
### Tier 1: The Non-Negotiables
These are the big ones. If you're not on these, stop reading and go sign up right now.
1. Google Business Profile This is #1 for a reason. It's how you show up in Google Maps and the local "Map Pack." If you have one listing and only one, this is it. Claim it. Optimize it. Keep it updated. (We wrote a full guide to optimizing your GBP if you want to go deep.)
2. Yelp Love it or hate it, Yelp still shows up in Google search results for plumbing queries. And plenty of homeowners still use it. Claim your listing, respond to reviews, and add photos.
3. Facebook Business Page Even if you're not posting on Facebook (and honestly, you probably shouldn't be spending much time there), your Facebook business page shows up in search results and gives you another verified listing.
4. Bing Places for Business Yeah, people still use Bing. About 6% of searches. That doesn't sound like much, but 6% of a big number is still a lot of potential customers. And it takes 5 minutes to set up.
5. Apple Maps If someone uses an iPhone and asks Siri for a plumber, Apple Maps is where it looks. Claim your listing at Apple Business Connect.
### Tier 2: High-Impact Directories
These are well-established directories with strong domain authority. Google trusts them, and customers use them.
6. Angi (formerly Angie's List) Specifically built for home service businesses. High-intent users. People on Angi are actively looking to hire a plumber.
7. HomeAdvisor Same company as Angi now, but still a separate platform with separate listings. Get on both.
8. BBB (Better Business Bureau) An accredited BBB listing with an A+ rating is a powerful trust signal. It shows up in Google results and adds credibility to your brand.
9. Thumbtack Popular with homeowners shopping for local services. Good for visibility, especially in larger markets.
10. Nextdoor Neighborhood-based platform where people ask for and recommend local businesses. Claiming your business page here is free and puts you in front of hyper-local customers.
### Tier 3: SEO Boosters
These directories might not send you a ton of direct traffic, but they strengthen your NAP consistency and give Google more signals.
11. Yellow Pages (YP.com) Old school? Yes. Still relevant for SEO? Absolutely. High domain authority. Google trusts it.
12. Manta Business directory with strong SEO value. Takes 5 minutes to create a listing.
13. Superpages Another legacy directory with solid domain authority. Quick and free.
14. Foursquare / Factual These power a lot of other apps and directories behind the scenes. Getting your info right here cascades to dozens of other platforms.
15. MapQuest Still exists. Still gets traffic. And it's another data source Google references for local business info.
How to Set Up Your Listings (The Right Way)
Here's where most plumbers screw this up.
They create listings on a bunch of directories with slightly different information. One listing says "Mike's Plumbing." Another says "Mike's Plumbing LLC." One has the office phone number. Another has the cell phone.
This inconsistency confuses Google. It doesn't know which information is correct, so it trusts you less.
Here's the rule:
Use the EXACT same business name, address, and phone number on every single directory. We cover this in more detail in our citation building guide. Character for character. If your business name is "Mike's Plumbing & Drain," don't shorten it to "Mike's Plumbing" on one directory and "Mikes Plumbing and Drain" on another.
Same name. Same address. Same phone. Everywhere.
I know that sounds obsessive. It is. But it works.
The Checklist for Each Listing
When you create or update each directory listing, make sure to include:
- Correct NAP (Name, Address, Phone... obviously)
- Website URL (always link back to your site)
- Business hours (and keep them updated)
- Business description (include your city and main services)
- Categories (choose "Plumber" and "Plumbing Service" as primary)
- Photos (real photos of your team, trucks, and work)
- Service areas (list the specific cities/neighborhoods you serve)
The more complete your listings, the better they perform. Half-empty profiles don't help anyone.
How Long Does This Take?
If you sat down and did all 15 in one afternoon, you're looking at about 3 to 4 hours. Maybe 5 if you're taking your time.
That's it. One afternoon of work for a permanent boost to your local SEO.
Or you can spread it out. Do 3 directories per day for a week. Whatever works.
The point is to do it. Most of your competitors haven't. Which means this is an easy way to get ahead.
The Ongoing Maintenance
Once your listings are created, you're not completely done. You need to:
- Check them every 6 months for accuracy (sometimes directories auto-edit your info)
- Respond to reviews on Yelp, Google, and any other platform that gets them
- Update hours for holidays and seasonal changes
- Add new photos periodically
Set a calendar reminder. Twice a year. 30 minutes each time. That's it.
The Shortcut
If doing this yourself sounds like torture (I get it, you'd rather be working), there are services that handle directory submissions for you. Companies like Yext, Moz Local, or BrightLocal can manage all your listings from one dashboard.
They run $15 to $50/month, depending on the service. Worth it if you value your time.
Or... just let us handle it as part of your website package.
Your Listings Are Your Foundation
Think of directory listings like the pipes behind the wall. Nobody sees them. But if they're not right, nothing works properly.
Your Google ranking depends on consistent, accurate listings across the web. It's not glamorous. It's not exciting. But it absolutely moves the needle.
Get your free website audit and we'll check your current directory presence. We'll tell you which listings you're missing, which ones have incorrect info, and exactly what to fix.
Takes us about 10 minutes. Could save you months of wondering why you're not ranking.
P.S. Quick test: Google your business name right now. Look at the results beyond your website. Are your directory listings showing up? Is the info correct? If you see old phone numbers, wrong addresses, or missing listings... that's costing you rankings and customers. Let's clean it up.
