YOUR GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE IS A MESS. HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT IN 20 MINUTES.

This free tool from Google is the single most powerful thing you can do for your plumbing business online. And you're probably ignoring it.

There's a free tool from Google that can get you more calls than any ad you'll ever run.

It costs $0.

It takes 20 minutes to set up properly.

And 90% of plumbers either don't have it or have it set up so badly it's actually hurting them.

I'm talking about your Google Business Profile.

You know, that box that shows up on the right side of Google when someone searches for your business. Or the listings that show up on Google Maps.

If yours looks empty, outdated, or just... sad... you're handing calls to your competitors on a silver platter.

Let me show you how to fix it. Right now. In 20 minutes.

Why This Matters More Than Your Website

Bold claim, right?

Here's why I mean it.

When someone Googles "plumber near me," Google shows them THREE things:

  1. Ads (at the top)
  2. The Map Pack (3 local businesses with reviews)
  3. Organic results (regular website listings)

The Map Pack gets 42% of all clicks.

More than ads. More than the websites below it.

And the Map Pack is powered entirely by your Google Business Profile.

So if your profile is empty or poorly optimized, you're not showing up in the one spot that gets the most clicks.

That's like having a storefront on Main Street but keeping the lights off and the door locked.

Step 1: Claim Your Profile (If You Haven't Already)

Go to Google Business Profile.

Search for your business name. If it shows up, claim it. If it doesn't, create it.

Google will verify you (usually by postcard or phone call). This takes a few days but it's a one-time thing.

If you've already claimed it... great. But claiming it is only 10% of the job.

Step 2: Fill Out EVERYTHING

This is where most plumbers drop the ball.

They fill out their name, address, and phone number... and stop.

That's like filling out a job application with just your name.

Here's what you need to complete:

Business name. Your real business name. Don't stuff keywords in here ("Mike's Plumbing | Best Emergency Plumber in Austin" will get you penalized).

Address. If you go to customer locations, you can hide your street address and just show your service area.

Phone number. Use your main business line. Not a tracking number, not your cell.

Website. Link to your homepage.

Business hours. Including emergency/after-hours if you do that.

Business category. Primary: "Plumber." Add secondary categories like "Water heater repair service," "Drain cleaning service," etc.

Service area. List every city and zip code you serve.

Services. List every service you offer. Water heater installation. Drain cleaning. Sewer repair. Leak detection. All of them.

Business description. 750 characters about what you do, where you serve, and why someone should call you.

Step 3: Add Real Photos

This is the one everyone skips. And it's the one that makes the biggest difference.

Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more clicks to their website.

Not stock photos. Real photos.

Your truck. Your team. Before and after shots. You on a job site. Your equipment. We've got a full guide on the 7 photos every plumber needs.

Aim for at least 10 photos. Add more every month if you can. Google loves fresh content.

Step 4: Get Reviews (And Respond to All of Them)

Reviews are the #1 factor in Google Map Pack rankings.

More reviews = higher ranking = more calls.

Here's the simple system:

After every job, send the customer a text with a direct link to your Google review page. "Hey [name], thanks for choosing us today. If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would really help us out: [link]"

That's it. No pressure. No begging. Just a simple ask.

Most happy customers will do it. You just have to ask.

And when reviews come in, respond to every single one. Even the good ones. "Thanks Mike, glad we could help with that water heater. Call us anytime!"

Google sees that you're active and engaged. And rewards you for it.

Step 5: Post Updates Weekly

Google Business Profile has a "Posts" feature that almost nobody uses.

It's like social media, but for Google.

Post a photo from a recent job. Share a tip. Announce a seasonal promotion.

One post per week. Takes 5 minutes.

This tells Google your business is active and current. Which helps your ranking.

The 20-Minute Checklist

Here's everything in order:

  1. Claim/verify your profile (one-time)
  2. Fill out every single field
  3. Add 10+ real photos
  4. Ask your last 5 customers for reviews
  5. Respond to all existing reviews
  6. Write your first post

Do this today. In 20 minutes. And watch what happens to your visibility on Google Maps over the next 30 days.
