CASE STUDY: OKLAHOMA CITY PLUMBER ESCAPES FEAST-OR-FAMINE CYCLE WITH CONSISTENT WEB LEADS
How an OKC plumber went from unpredictable months of feast or famine to 35+ consistent web leads every single month.
One Month He's Booked Solid. The Next Month... Crickets.
If you're a plumber, you know this feeling.
January, your phone is blowing up. Emergency calls left and right. Frozen pipes, burst water lines, people panicking. You're turning down work.
February? Dead. Like, "maybe I should update my resume" dead.
March picks up a little. April's decent. May goes insane again. Then summer rolls around and you're staring at your phone wondering if it's broken.
Checks phone. Not broken. Just nobody calling.
That was life for Derek Simmons at Patriot Plumbing in Oklahoma City. For eight years straight.
"I never knew if I'd have a $15,000 month or a $4,000 month," Derek told us. "I couldn't plan anything. Couldn't hire. Couldn't buy a new truck. I was always one slow month away from trouble."
The Real Problem Wasn't Seasonal Work
Sure, plumbing has seasonal spikes. Everybody knows that.
But here's what Derek didn't realize. The feast-or-famine cycle wasn't because of seasons. It was because of his lead sources.
Derek was relying on three things:
- Word-of-mouth referrals (unpredictable by nature)
- One Angi listing (expensive and inconsistent)
- A website his brother-in-law built in 2018 (basically a digital business card)
His website had five pages. Homepage, About, Services (one page for ALL services), Contact, and a blog with two posts from 2019 that both said "Coming Soon" as the content.
I wish I was making that up.
Zero SEO. Zero optimization. Zero strategy. It was a placeholder, not a lead generator.
When your only consistent lead source is "hoping people remember your name," you're gonna have famine months. Guaranteed.
What We Changed
We rebuilt Patriot Plumbing's website from the ground up with one goal: consistent, predictable lead flow every single month.
Here's what went into it:
### 18 Individual Service Pages
Not one generic "Services" page. Eighteen dedicated pages for every service Derek offers:
- Water heater repair and installation
- Drain cleaning
- Sewer line repair
- Gas line services
- Bathroom remodeling
- Faucet and fixture installation
- Garbage disposal repair
- And 11 more
Each page targets specific keywords people actually search for. "Water heater repair Oklahoma City" gets its own page. "Drain cleaning OKC" gets its own page. You get the idea. Learn the full strategy in our service pages guide.
### 14 Service Area Pages
Oklahoma City is huge. And people search for plumbers in their specific part of town.
We built dedicated pages for Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon, Midwest City, Del City, Bethany, Mustang, Piedmont, Nichols Hills, The Village, Warr Acres, Lake Hefner area, and Bricktown/Downtown.
That's 14 new doors for customers to find Derek through.
### A Blog That Actually Works
We set Derek up with a monthly blog strategy. Real articles about plumbing problems OKC homeowners face. Seasonal content that targets searches people make at specific times of year.
"What to do when your pipes freeze in Oklahoma City" goes live in November. It ranks by December. It generates calls in January when pipes actually freeze.
That's proactive marketing, not reactive scrambling. See our seasonal SEO strategy for how to plan this out.
### Review Integration and Trust Signals
Derek had 67 Google reviews with a 4.9 average. His old website mentioned none of them.
The new site pulls those reviews in automatically. Shows them on every page. Social proof on steroids.
The Results: Month by Month
Here's what happened after launch (these are real numbers):
Month 1: 18 calls from the website (up from 3-4 average) Month 2: 27 calls Month 3: 35 calls Month 4: 38 calls Month 5: 41 calls Month 6: 36 calls (a "slow" month that would've been his best month before)
Look at those numbers. Look at the consistency.
No month under 18 calls. No month where the phone just stops ringing. The famine was over.
Derek's revenue stabilized too:
- Before: Average monthly revenue between $4,000 and $15,000 (feast or famine)
- After: Average monthly revenue between $12,000 and $22,000 (consistent growth)
His worst month after the website was better than his average month before.
The Hire That Changed Everything
Here's the part that really gets me.
Three months in, Derek's phone was ringing so consistently that he did something he'd wanted to do for years but could never justify.
He hired his first employee.
"I couldn't hire anyone before because I couldn't guarantee them work," Derek said. "What am I gonna do, hire a guy and then send him home two weeks out of every month? Now I've got consistent leads coming in. I can actually build a team."
That's what a real website does. It doesn't just generate leads. It gives you the confidence to grow. To invest. To plan more than 30 days ahead.
Derek hired his second employee four months later.
Why Consistency Beats Volume
A lot of plumbers chase volume. They want the phone ringing 100 times a day.
But what Derek taught us (and what we already knew but love hearing confirmed) is that consistency matters more than volume.
35 calls a month, every month, is infinitely better than 80 calls one month and 5 the next.
Consistency lets you:
- Hire with confidence (you know you can keep people busy)
- Buy equipment (you know you can make the payments)
- Take a vacation (the leads keep coming while you're gone)
- Sleep at night (you're not panicking about next month)
Your Feast-or-Famine Fix
If Derek's story sounds familiar, you're not alone. Most plumbers we talk to deal with this exact cycle.
And the fix is the same every time. Build a website that generates its own leads through search. Stop relying on referrals and paid listings as your only sources.
Your website should be your most consistent lead generator. Not your business card. Not a checkbox. Use Google Search Console to track which pages are driving the most traffic. An actual, working piece of your business that brings in customers 24/7, 365 days a year.
Get your free website audit and let us show you where the gaps are. We'll tell you exactly why your phone isn't ringing consistently and how to fix it.
Or see what other plumbers have experienced on our reviews page.
P.S. Derek told us something that stuck with me. "For the first time in eight years, I know what next month looks like." That's not just business success. That's peace of mind. Get yours.
