HOW TO GET MORE GOOGLE REVIEWS FOR YOUR PLUMBING BUSINESS (WITHOUT BEING ANNOYING)
Reviews are the #1 thing homeowners look at before calling a plumber. Here's the simple system for getting more of them.
Here's a stat that should get your attention.
88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.
That means when a homeowner is choosing between you and the guy down the road, your Google reviews are basically word-of-mouth on steroids.
More reviews = more trust = more calls.
Fewer reviews = "hmm, are they legit?" = back button.
So how do you get more reviews without being weird about it?
The Simple System (Takes 30 Seconds Per Customer)
This isn't complicated. But most plumbers don't do it because they feel awkward asking.
Get over it. Your competitor isn't awkward about it. That's why he has 87 reviews and you have 4.
Here's the system:
Step 1: Create your direct review link.
Go to your Google Business Profile. Click "Ask for reviews." Copy the link Google gives you.
Save this link in your phone's notes app.
Step 2: Send a text after every job.
Right after you finish a job, while you're still in the truck, send this text:
"Hey [first name], thanks for choosing us today! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean the world to us: [your review link]"
That's it.
No long message. No begging. No "it would really help my small business." Just a simple, quick ask with the link right there.
Step 3: Do it every single time.
Not sometimes. Not when you remember. Every. Single. Job.
Make it part of your routine. Finish the job. Get in the truck. Send the text.
If you do 3 jobs a day, 5 days a week, and even 30% of customers leave a review... that's 4-5 new reviews per week. 20 per month. 240 per year.
In 6 months you'll have more reviews than 95% of plumbers in your city.
What to Do When You Get a Bad Review
It happens. Someone's having a bad day. They expected you to fix a $5,000 problem for $200. Whatever.
Here's the rule: never, ever respond emotionally. We wrote a whole guide on how to respond to bad reviews like a pro.
Wait 24 hours. Then write something like:
"Hi [name], we're sorry to hear about your experience. We take all feedback seriously and would love the chance to make this right. Please call us at [number] so we can discuss this directly."
That's it. Professional. Calm. Shows future customers that you handle problems like an adult.
One bad review surrounded by 50 good ones actually makes you MORE trustworthy. People get suspicious of businesses with only 5-star reviews.
How Reviews Affect Your Google Ranking
This is the part most plumbers don't realize.
Reviews aren't just for building trust with customers. They directly affect where you show up on Google.
Google's local ranking algorithm considers three things:
- Relevance (do you offer what they're searching for)
- Distance (how close are you to the searcher)
- Prominence (how well-known and trusted you are)
Reviews are the #1 factor in prominence. We dig deeper into local SEO ranking factors in another post.
More reviews, higher ratings, and recent reviews all push you higher in the Map Pack.
So getting reviews isn't just about looking good. It's about showing up in the first place.
The Mistakes to Avoid
Don't buy fake reviews. Google will catch you. They'll remove the reviews AND penalize your profile. Not worth it.
Don't offer incentives. "Leave a review, get $20 off your next visit" violates Google's terms. Don't do it.
Don't send the same template message every time. Mix it up a little. Personalize it. "Great job on that water heater install today, Mike!"
Don't only ask happy customers. Ask everyone. You'll be surprised how many "neutral" customers will leave a positive review when asked.
Start Today
Open your phone right now. Find your Google review link. Save it.
Then text it to the last 5 customers you worked for.
"Hey, I'm trying to build up my Google reviews. If you had a good experience, would you mind leaving a quick review? Here's the link: [link]. Would really appreciate it!"
5 texts. 2 minutes. Probably 2-3 reviews by tomorrow.
Do that every day for a month and watch what happens to your call volume.
If you want a website that actually shows off those reviews (with a dedicated testimonials section, review badges, and star ratings baked into Google search results), that's what we build. Book a free 15-minute audit and we'll show you the full picture.
